Innovative Energy Solutions: HŽPP's New Order for Battery and Bi-Mode Trains

As reported by a recent publication,Croatia’s national passenger service,HŽPP,has partnered with Končar KEV to deliver a mix of trainsets including four battery-powered units,four battery-electric models,and five electro-diesel trains slated for deployment in 2027-28.

The project also includes the establishment of two charging stations located in Lupoglav and Velika.

This €117.9 million deal was finalized on June 30 and is backed by funding from the european Investment Bank.

The contract was officially signed by HŽPP’s CEO Željko Ukić alongside Josip Ninić, who leads the management board at Končar KEV.

“Currently, we have a fleet of 65 modern trains operating,” he noted. “By year-end, we expect to add five more. Next year will see six additional electro-diesel units introduced for the Zagreb-split route.”

Additionally, HŽPP is eyeing an order for another eleven multiple-unit trains in the near future.
