DSB Expands Fleet with 50 Additional Electric Trainsets

According too a recent declaration, Denmark’s national train operator DSB is set to finalize an order for an additional 50 Alstom Coradia Stream IC5 electric multiple units. This decision, revealed on June 26, falls under a broader framework agreement established in June 2021 that initially included a ample €1.4 billion order for the first batch of 100 five-car EMUs designed for inter-city and regional travel at speeds of up to 200 km/h.

The production of these trains is currently taking place at Alstom’s facility in Salzgitter, Germany. The first unit is anticipated to reach Danish soil later this year. After undergoing necessary testing and staff training sessions, these new IC5 trains are projected to commence passenger operations by the year 2027. Maintenance for this fleet will be handled at new depots being constructed in Aarhus and København.

This latest acquisition aims to phase out older diesel trains as part of DSB’s ambitious electrification initiative that targets a fully electric fleet by the year 2030 using a standard voltage of 25 kV at 50 Hz. Transitioning from diesel not onyl supports environmental sustainability but also helps create a more cohesive fleet across services.

“By ordering more IC5 units, we reaffirm our commitment to establishing a dependable and future-ready electric train network in Denmark,” stated Jürgen Müller, who oversees Strategy & Rolling Stock at DSB. “We trust that Alstom’s IC5 models will meet our passengers’ expectations regarding quality and comfort.” This move reflects not just operational goals but also aligns with global trends towards greener public transport solutions.
