The revamped rules, set to be officially announced the first week of March, will introduce new consumer protection violations, with the new rules taking full effect on Monday, March 17.
According to the ministry, the goal is to help consumers distinguish between genuine and misleading discounts, ensuring they make informed and cost-effective purchasing decisions. A key requirement under the new rules is that all advertised discounts must be based on the lowest price of the last 30 days. For example, a “-30%” discount must reflect a reduction from the actual price that was in effect during the previous month.
Retailers will also be obligated to clearly display the reference price on which the discount is calculated, ensuring transparency for shoppers.
Exemptions and Special Cases
Not all products will fall under the 30-day price rule. Perishable agricultural goods and food items that may become unsuitable for sale within 30 days of harvest, production, or processing are exempt from these regulations.
Beyond the 30-day rule, the revised Code of Conduct will clarify the rules surrounding bulk purchase discounts, such as “Buy 1, Get 1 Free” or “Buy 5, Get 1 Free.” These offers will only be considered legitimate if the same
