Bitcoin Life Insurer Meanwhile Raises $37.5M to Grow Bitcoin Life Cover Overseas

What makes the raise worth a second look is less the number than the paperwork behind it: life insurance that inherits bitcoin, sold inside a regulated insurer rather than handed down through a seed phrase.

What the Policy Actually Pays Out

Meanwhile launched BTC Life 1-Pay earlier in 2026 for high-net-worth clients outside the US, its second product line after BTC 10-Pay, which is built for US taxpayers. The terms of the newer policy are specific:

  • One premium, paid in bitcoin only, since the company does not accept fiat
  • A death benefit guaranteed in bitcoin for life
  • Borrowing of up to 90% of the policy's value after the first year, with no repayment schedule and no margin calls
  • A loan rate of 3% a year in BTC, with principal and interest owed and repaid in bitcoin

The surrender value grows to equal the full face amount by age 100, calculated with a 2% annual compounding rate and the 2017 CSO Mortality Table. All of that is set out on Meanwhile's own site.

Read those terms together and the design becomes clear. Meanwhile says there is no currency risk because the whole business runs in BTC, from premiums and benefits to investments and financial statements. The other side of it is that a benefit written in bitcoin is worth whatever bitcoin is worth on the day a family claims it.

The ending is handled with unusual care. Beneficiaries submit proof of death, and Meanwhile's claim specialist arranges payment to a BTC address of the beneficiary's choice, with no custodial set-up needed on their side.

A Licence Bermuda Had Not Issued Before

The operating entity, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited, holds the first Class IILT licence granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. It received that licence in July 2024, after two years in the regulator's sandbox.

The insurer's balance sheet, reserves and audited financial statements are all denominated in bitcoin. Policyholder bitcoin is not held by the company itself: Anchorage Digital Bank is the primary custodian, with Coinbase available as an additional qualified custodian. Premiums are invested in high credit quality fixed income to fund long-term liabilities, under the company's investment committee and board.

The Families Brokers Keep Hearing From

Since launch, Meanwhile has signed 15 brokers serving wealthy families, including in Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE and Switzerland. Partners include Lioner, an insurance, trust and family office group, and Apeiron Group, a marketplace for high-net-worth life insurance. Policies can be owned by individuals, trusts or companies, which the company says makes them suited to succession and estate planning.

"We're reaching a turning point where more high-net-worth clients are asking not just how to hold Bitcoin and digital assets, but how to plan around them and ultimately transfer that wealth to the next generation," said Justin Man, chief executive of Apeiron Group.
