Strive buys 3311 bitcoin for 280 million in its biggest bet since January

Vivek Ramaswamy's bitcoin treasury firm just placed its largest wager since the Semler merger, buying thousands of coins during a rough week for the crypto market.

Strive, Inc. told investors on October 13 that it bought 3,311 bitcoin for roughly $280 million between October 5 and October 9, at an average price near $84,500 a coin. That pushed the company's total holdings from 29,462 to 32,773 BTC, according to a filing reported by The Block. It's Strive's biggest single buy since the roughly 5,048 bitcoin it absorbed through its all-stock merger with Semler Scientific back in January.

The timing is what makes this interesting. Strive bought that bitcoin at an average of $84,500 a coin during a rough week for the market. Bitcoin traded around $83,300 on October 14 after sliding below Strive's purchase price, leaving the newest coins slightly underwater within days of the purchase closing. The move was still aggressive: the latest buy was more than 13 times the 250 BTC Strategy added over roughly the same period, and it came while bitcoin remained well below its 2025 record near $126,200.

Strive's chief executive, Matt Cole, has said the company wants to end 2026 as the world's second-largest public bitcoin holder, behind only Strategy. As of this purchase, Strive still trails Metaplanet by roughly 11,227 BTC, or about $937.5 million at current prices, according to CoinGape. Buying before a price spike reverses is exactly the kind of move a treasury company racing for rank would make. But Cole's own disclosures tie part of the timing to something unrelated to bitcoin's chart: roughly 15.3 million warrants on Strive stock were set to expire at 5 p.m. Eastern on October 13, and the company reported $208 million in warrant exercises ahead of that deadline. Some of the money funding this purchase came from shares converted under pressure of an expiring deadline, not a calculated read on where bitcoin was headed next.

That's a meaningfully different story than the one Strategy has been telling lately. Michael Saylor's company added 250 BTC for $21.5 million between October 5 and October 11, while also repurchasing $192.4 million of its STRC preferred stock. That's a fraction of the pace it kept earlier in the year, and it shows how much of Strategy's current capital management is now tied to preferred stock and balance-sheet management rather than simply buying more bitcoin every week. Where Strategy is pacing itself, Strive just put more than 13 times as much new bitcoin into its treasury in a single week, funded substantially by equity and warrant conversions.

Does that mean Strive has more conviction, or just less discipline? It's a fair question, and the honest answer is probably both. Strive hasn't disclosed its average cost basis across the whole 32,773 BTC position in this filing. But the company did disclose buying 8,137 bitcoin at an average of $78,885 during the third quarter alone, so this latest batch at $84,500 continues a trend of paying up as the year goes on. It's not a dip buy by any definition that mattered a week later.

None of this is really about Strive's spreadsheet. It's a test of whether the corporate bitcoin treasury model that Strategy pioneered still works when bitcoin isn't cooperating. For years the pitch to shareholders was simple: give us your capital, we'll stack bitcoin faster and more efficiently than you could alone, and the stock will trade at a premium to the coins we hold. That pitch gets harder to sell when the company buying near recent highs ends up holding coins worth a little less within days.

Retail sentiment has been shaky for a reason. Bitcoin is still trading roughly a third below its 2025 high, and treasury buyers now have to convince investors that accumulation at these levels can still create value. If Strive's shares start trading closer to the raw value of its bitcoin instead of at a premium, the whole mechanism that let it raise $208 million in a week starts to break down. That's the real risk sitting underneath this purchase, and it has nothing to do with whether bitcoin eventually recovers past $84,500. It has to do with whether the market still believes treasury companies deserve to be paid a premium for doing something investors could do themselves by just buying bitcoin directly.

Strive's stock, ticker ASST, will be the thing to watch over the coming weeks. A premium holding steady despite the drawdown would say institutional conviction in the treasury model is intact. A premium that compresses toward the value of the underlying coins would say something else entirely, and would be a far bigger story than any single $280 million purchase.
