Companies shake hands over ammonia-fueled vessel charter
On April 14, 2025, CMB.TECH NV announced a partnership with Fortescue to charter a new ammonia-powered vessel.
The vessel, a 210,000-dwt Newcastlemax with a dual-fuel engine, is part of CMB.TECH’s ongoing series of large dry bulk carriers. It is expected to be delivered by the end of 2026 and will primarily transport iron ore from Fortescue’s Pilbara mines to global customers, including those in China.
To remind, the Fortescue Green Pioneer, the world’s first dual-fuel ammonia-powered vessel, has already made its way to London and will soon tour global ports.
Through the Fortescue Green Pioneer we have demonstrated that the technology to decarbonise shipping exists now. We will continue to work with like-minded companies like Bocimar to transition our fleet to low and zero-emissions vessels and help accelerate the widespread adoption of green ammonia as a marine fuel.
… said Fortescue Metals CEO, Dino Otranto.
Additionally, Alexander Saverys, CEO of CMB.TECH, highlighted that their shared belief in green ammonia as the fuel of the future played a key role in reaching the important agreement toward achieving zero-emission shipping. Saverys pointed out that this agreement marked the beginning of an exciting journey to build more ammonia-powered ships, which would help stimulate further green ammonia production projects.
