Global ship recycling operations hit some of their lowest activity levels in nearly two decades, while undergoing notable shifts.
In 2024, only 324 merchant ships were dismantled worldwide, totaling 4.6 million gross tonnes (GT)—the lowest volume since 2005 and a drop of more than 30% compared to 2023, which was already a subdued year.
