The world’s largest battery-electric ferry, China Zorrilla, has arrived in the Río de la Plata, with operator Buquebus welcoming the vessel to Nueva Palmira, Uruguay.
Buquebus said authorities, public and private institutions, strategic partners and media representatives from Argentina, Uruguay and other countries gathered in Nueva Palmira to mark the vessel’s arrival. The China Zorrilla was built by Australian shipbuilder Incat for Buquebus and is designed to operate as a fully battery-electric ferry. The vessel measures 130 meters and is powered by a large battery-electric propulsion system.
Among those attending were Uruguay’s Secretary of the Presidency Alejandro Sánchez, Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining Fernanda Cardona, Minister of Environment Edgardo Ortuño, Minister of Tourism Pablo Menoni and Colonia Mayor Guillermo Rodríguez.
Representatives of the National Ports Administration, the Uruguayan Navy and other public and private organizations also attended, alongside Robert Clifford, founder and chairman of Incat Group.
Its arrival in the Río de la Plata follows its transoceanic transportation aboard the heavy-lift vessel Black Marlin. The ferry is expected to serve Buquebus’ connection between Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay.
Buquebus described the arrival as the result of a major international effort involving companies, institutions and partners from multiple countries.
Welcome to the Río de la Plata, China Zorrilla
