Strengthening Partnerships and Delivering Next-Generation Classification Services to Meet Evolving Industry Needs
(DUBAI) The impact of carbon capture and digital technologies as well as IMO Mid-Term Measures and FuelEU on the cost of compliance led the discussion at the ABS Middle East Regional Committee Meeting.
The committee welcomed Khalid Alhammad, President of Bahri Ship Management, who started his term as chairman of the ABS Middle East Regional Committee.
Alhammad said: “This forum has an important role in fostering collaboration among industry leaders to advance environmental sustainability and operational excellence. As our industry navigates the challenges of producing and transporting energy and goods during the transition to net zero, ABS remains at the forefront, leveraging advanced technologies and digital solutions to enhance safety, efficiency, and resilience. Expanding its presence in the region, ABS is strengthening partnerships and delivering next-generation classification services to meet evolving industry needs, reinforcing its position as a leader in one of the world's most vital maritime hubs.”
“Market-based decarbonization measures as well as world economics, geopolitics and shipyard capacity are really challenging the shipping industry. Fortunately, ABS is built to support the industry through this period of rapid change. We are investing here in the region to support our clients with advanced technology, engineering and survey operations teams. Our committee plays an important role in this support and is a powerful resource comprised of influential leaders from around the Middle East,” said John McDonald, ABS President and COO.
The committee was briefed on major market trends including the energy transition and digital transformation. There was an update on alternative fuels, including the latest research on advanced nuclear reactor technologies and the emergence and growth of methanol and ammonia. The members also heard the latest news from the IMO on greenhouse gas reduction targets as well as a primer on how fleet pooling can support compliance with FuelEU Maritime regulations. In the offshore sector, ABS is the market leader in the Middle East with a number one position in the existing fleet for exploration, production and support vessels.
In his farewell message, Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi, CEO of ADNOC Logistics & Services and outgoing chairman, reflected on his tenure: “Serving in this role has been an honor and a privilege, one that has allowed me to work with some of the brightest minds in our industry. I have every confidence that Eng. Khalid Alhammad will lead this Committee with vision and integrity.”
