A new industry project will test whether direct, independently verified onboard CO₂ measurements can strengthen the accuracy and credibility of emissions reporting from LNG-fuelled ships.

The maritime industry has long relied on fuel consumption, standard emissions factors and engine test-bed data to calculate vessel emissions. But as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) moves towards finalising its Net-Zero Framework, a new industry project is examining whether those estimates accurately reflect emissions measured directly from ships in operation — and whether real-time monitoring could have a role in future emissions regulation.

The project, led by Lloyd’s Register (LR), Seapeak, Kongsberg Maritime and Tunable will install a continuous emissions monitoring system (CEMS) on a newly built LNG carrier due for delivery in early 2027. The system will collect emissions data for a year, allowing the partners to compare directly measured CO₂ emissions with figures calculated from engine test-bed data and established emissions factors.

Furthermore, the project will also examine how emissions vary under real operating conditions and whether independently verified measurements could play a role in future emissions reporting under IMO and EU frameworks.

Lloyd’s Register, which will act as independent verifier, will assess the monitoring system’s technical performance and regulatory relevance.

Seapeak’s James Cruickshank said the project could provide more detailed emissions data for operational decision-making and help identify opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across a fleet.

The system is being developed by Kongsberg Maritime with gas analysis technology from Tunable.

The project was announced at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok.
