How US agencies made a success of “complex” Dali salvage

All salvage operations are complex and have their own particular challenges, but few recoveries can have had so many elements of potential danger as the operation to reopen the access channel to the port of Baltimore after the Dali had collided with a bridge support.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge immediately collapsed on impact, killing six unfortunate workers on the road and blocking marine traffic for around 11 weeks, from 26 March, a surprisingly short period given that Dali’s bow was buried under a tangle of steel, asphalt and concrete, pinning the vessel to the riverbed.
