Norway-based energy data and intelligence company TGS has launched advanced imaging centers in collaboration with Brazilian state-owned energy giant Petrobras to improve subsurface data interpretation for the Campos and Santos basins offshore Brazil.
TGS noted that these centers, based at Petrobras’ Rio de Janeiro offices, will focus on ocean bottom nodes (OBNs) and 4D imaging to improve reservoir monitoring and exploration efforts in Brazil’s offshore sector.
The imaging centers integrate TGS’ 4D Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) technology, delivering high-resolution subsurface insights. According to TGS, this approach supports Petrobras in refining exploration strategies, optimizing production, and increasing resource recovery.
Additionally, hybrid 4D solutions, streamer, OBN, and ocean bottom cable (OBC) data, are said to be incorporated for a more comprehensive geological understanding.
“The establishment of these imaging centers marks a significant milestone in our collaboration with Petrobras,” said Wadii El Karkouri, EVP of Imaging and Technology at TGS.
“By combining TGS’ imaging expertise and technologies with Petrobras’s operational excellence, we are poised to uncover new opportunities for Brazil’s energy sector. This investment also reinforces our long-standing commitment to building local capabilities and resources in the region.”
The facilities are said to utilize both on-premises and cloud-based hardware to achieve unparalleled precision, enabling efficient data processing. Geoscientists from TGS and Petrobras will collaborate closely to harness the synergy between their expertise and technologies.
In August 2024, TGS signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Petrobras to collaborate on scientific research and technological development activities in Brazil.
Recent news from TGS includes the company securing four 4D streamer contract acquisition projects offshore Norway, three in the North Sea, and one in the Barents Sea.
