The Port of Aarhus, Denmark’s largest commercial port, has announced the finalization of an agreement to develop one of the most advanced

The Port of Aarhus, Denmark’s largest commercial port, has announced the finalization of an agreement to develop one of the most advanced shore power facilities in Europe. This initiative represents a significant step forward in reducing emissions and enhancing sustainable port operations in Northern Europe. The facility, designed specifically for container ships, will mark the first of its kind in Denmark and solidify the Port of Aarhus’s commitment to green transformation.

Collaboration with PowerCon

Under the agreement, Danish company PowerCon will supply the transformer station and power management system for the project. The facility, located at the port’s container terminal, will also feature a flexible cable management system developed by ShibataFenderTeam and Igus. This innovative system allows cables to move across the quay, enabling simultaneous power supply to up to four container ships.

Anne Zachariassen, COO of the Port of Aarhus, emphasized the importance of the project “We are pleased that we can once again collaborate with PowerCon to establish a shore power facility. It will reduce both noise and local particle pollution caused by ships using diesel generators. This benefits both the residents of the surrounding area and the employees at the port.”

The facility is expected to be operational by 2026, furthering the port’s efforts to become a leader in sustainable port operations.

A Model for Green Port Operations

The shore power project is part of the “OPS Network,” a collaborative initiative involving key Northern European ports, including Aarhus, Gothenburg, Bremerhaven, and Stockholm. Supported by the EU’s “Connecting Europe Facility” (CEF) fund, the network received a €18.8 million grant to expand shore power infrastructure for container ships.

Jacob Bjarkam, Head of Sales at PowerCon, expressed pride in the project’s ambition and scope “The shore power facility at the container terminal is one of the most advanced projects in Europe. We are proud that PowerCon’s technology and expertise contribute to a vision that sets new standards for green port operations.”

Once completed, the facility will enable container ships to connect to onshore power, eliminating the need for diesel generators while at berth. This will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, noise, and air pollution, contributing to the EU’s broader decarbonization goals.

Building on Success

This new facility builds on the success of the port’s existing shore power system at its cruise terminal, which became fully operational in 2024. That year, 68% of cruise ships utilized the facility, showcasing the high demand and effectiveness of shore power solutions.

The Port of Aarhus continues to lead Denmark’s green transition in the maritime sector. Anne Zachariassen highlighted the importance of international collaboration “We are very pleased that the European Commission and the CEF Committee recognize our high ambitions for the green transition. As some of Northern Europe’s most important ports, it is fantastic that we can collaborate to reduce the shipping industry’s climate footprint—this is a global challenge we stand together to tackle. Shore power for container ships is a crucial part of this effort for all the involved ports.”

Port of Aarhus: A Hub of Maritime Innovation

The Port of Aarhus has been a cornerstone of Denmark’s maritime industry since its establishment in 1845. Today, it handles a significant portion of the country’s imports and exports, with 6,954 ships visiting in 2023 and over 10 million tons of goods processed annually.

The port supports over 17,000 jobs across Denmark and contributes up to 10% of the country’s foreign trade value, amounting to DKK 150 billion. Its central location and global connectivity make it a vital hub for both freight and passenger transport.

With the completion of the shore power facility in 2026, the Port of Aarhus will continue to set benchmarks in green port operations. This project underscores the port’s mission to connect Denmark with the world while embracing sustainable solutions for a changing global economy.
