At the end of the year, HHLA Project Logistics successfully carried out its first loading operation in the Port of Hamburg.
As a subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), typically focused on project cargo in Asia, the company leveraged the expertise and network of the HHLA Group for its debut project in Germany. This effort was carried out in collaboration with HHLA’s UNIKAI Lagerei- und Speditionsgesellschaft.
The shipment included six oversized passenger railway carriages, each measuring 17 to 22 meters in length and weighing between 20 and 47 tonnes, along with their bogies. Manufactured in China, the wagons arrived in Hamburg via an ocean-going vessel. From the Wallmann & Co terminal, they were transferred to inland waterway vessels and transported to O’Swaldkai, HHLA’s universal cargo terminal.
At O’Swaldkai, the HHLA subsidiary UNIKAI managed the handling of the cargo. Following customs clearance, the carriages were placed on the terminal’s rail tracks, where they were prepared for onward transport by rail to the Czech Republic.
This successful first operation marks an important milestone for HHLA Project Logistics’ entry into the German market while showcasing the capabilities of the Port of Hamburg.
“With the support of our partners within the HHLA Group and other reliable specialists, we were able to complete this job quickly and smoothly,” emphasised Korneli Korchilava, Managing Director of HHLA Project Logistics.
He also highlighted the importance of rail for the environment: “I am particularly pleased that with this project we have been able to promote the transfer of traffic to rail and thus contribute to our company’s climate protection goals. It is opportunities like this that make the Port of Hamburg such a special location.”
