A fire erupted on a general cargo ship off the Sedef Island in the Sea of Marmara last week. The 104.2 meters long, Panama-flagged ship FG Sevil was reportedly underway from Yalova, Turkey to Bulgaria when the fire began in the engine room.

Officials confirmed that firefighting teams managed to extinguish the blaze after an intense response.

The fire reportedly started in the ship’s engine room, for an unknown reason, prompting an immediate response from Türkiye’s Directorate General of Coastal Safety (KEGM).

Coastal safety teams quickly responded to control the blaze. Emergency vessels, including the KEGM-4 rapid rescue boat, the Kurtarma 7 tug, and the Sark tug, were swiftly directed to the scene of the incident.

Following the intervention, the fire was extinguished, and the stricken vessel was towed to the Kartal Anchorage Area.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire. Further investigation will seek to clarify the circumstances leading to the incident.
