The inspection revealed several issues with the certification plate on the pilot ladder, which included the incorrect ISO standard reference. The plate referenced ISO 779-1 instead of the correct ISO 799-1 standard. Additionally, the plate lacked the necessary ISO 799-1 designation type. The serial number on the ladder matched the accompanying certificate, but there were discrepancies between the actual ladder’s specifications (such as the number of steps and the length) and the information listed on the certificate.
The counterfeit ladders were falsely branded as being produced by "QINGDAO GOOD BROTHER MARINE LIFE SAVING APPLIANCE Co. LTD.," a company that typically manufactures SOLAS-approved pilot ladders. However, in 2019, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority had already identified counterfeit pilot ladders bearing this company's name and claiming SOLAS certification. The alert also includes images of both the fraudulent certification plate and a valid one from the company for comparison.
