The Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) has issued Edition 2.1 of the Guidelines for Designing Cyber Security Onboard Ships, updating its framework for addressing cyber risks in maritime operations. This edition applies to ships contracted for construction before July 1, 2024, as newer regulations will govern contracts on or after that date.
The guidelines emphasize three key principles: prioritizing navigational safety by ensuring the availability of operational (OT) and information (IT) systems, implementing layered cyber security controls with clear stakeholder responsibilities, and continuously revising standards to keep pace with technological and regulatory developments.
Notable updates include the establishment of the “CybR-G” class notation with associated audit requirements and the inclusion of IACS Recommendation No. 166 on cyber resilience. These updates reflect ClassNK’s commitment to enhancing cybersecurity through best practices and alignment with international standards.
