Owners move ships from Hong Kong flag over Chinese ‘commandeering’ and US sanction fears
Shipping bosses in Hong Kong have revealed fears over getting caught in any conflict, diplomatic or otherwise, between China and the US, as ships depart the register.
Six shipping executives spoke to Reuters anonymously about concerns their vessels could be commandeered by Chinese authorities or hit with US sanctions.
Unease is being caused by the Chinese government’s focus on the role of Hong Kong in terms of domestic security interests, they said.
