LONDON, March 10 (Reuters) – A tanker transporting jet fuel for the U.S.military was involved in a collision with a container ship off the northeast coast of England on Monday. The impact resulted in fires aboard both vessels, leading to multiple explosions and prompting crew members to evacuate.

The tanker, capable of carrying substantial amounts of jet fuel, was anchored when it was struck by the smaller cargo ship, which caused damage to its cargo tank and spilled fuel into the surrounding waters, according to its operator. Stena Bulk confirmed these details.

Maritime security sources indicated that there were no signs of foul play or involvement from other parties in this incident.

Local authorities reported that 32 individuals required medical attention; however, by early afternoon only one person remained hospitalized.

Experts warned about potential environmental repercussions from the spill.

The tanker involved is identified as Stena Immaculate and is operated by Crowley Logistics. It was carrying Jet-A1 fuel at the time it was hit by the Portuguese-flagged vessel Solong while anchored near Hull, as noted by Crowley on social media platform X.This tanker is part of a U.S. government initiative aimed at providing necessary fuel supplies for military operations. A spokesperson from the U.S. military stated that it had been chartered temporarily for use by the Navy’s Military Sealift Command.

The Solong carried 15 containers filled with sodium cyanide—a hazardous substance primarily used in gold mining—as well as an unspecified amount of alcohol based on casualty reports from maritime data provider Lloyd’s List Intelligence.

Emergency response teams deployed helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, lifeboats, and nearby vessels equipped for firefighting to address the situation early Monday morning.

“A fire broke out due to the allision and there were reports of released fuel,” stated Crowley. An allision refers specifically
